Sinopsis:
La firma legal Preston y Preston estaba integrada por padre e hijo. Lawrence, el padre, es un profesional con más de veinte años de experiencia legal. Kenneth, el hijo, es un principiante. Su proceso de aprendizaje como socio de su padre es una parte integral de esta serie.
En una época en que la televisión evitaba cualquier atisbo de controversia, "Los Defensores" trataba ocasionalmente complejos temas de la vida real tales como el aborto, la eutanasia, o la restricción que el gobierno de EEUU imponía a sus ciudadanos para viajar a países enemigos. Su episodio "Lista Negra" fue la primera mirada seria de la TV americana a sus propias prácticas de discriminación, llevando al actor Jack Klugman ("Quincy") y al escritor Ernest Kinoy a ganar sendos premios Emmy.
